5/24/15 through 5/31/15

5/24/15 through 5/31/15

Sunday
When the Holy Spirit came
In flashing tongues of holy flame
Timid ones stood and proclaimed
With love, the power of Jesus' name.

Without the fire of God within
We're far more apt to fall in sin
But with the Spirit's seven fold power
We're clothed to meet temptation's hour.

Monday
Remembering the fallen ones
This day we set aside
To call to mind the sacrifice
Of those who fought and died.

Protecting freedom in our land
So generations hence
Could live in liberty and peace
All bought at their expense.

We must respect their gift to us
By living everyday
As ones who care for others in
The same self-giving way.

Tuesday
The call to simple sacrifice
Will greet us every morn
We must control our appetites
For us to be reborn

Not suffering repeated blows
Or asked to give our all
But giving up what no one knows
Through works considered small.

Wednesday
The island of my ancestors
was once a source of pride
A faithful Catholic people with
The Church to be their guide.

But through the years the thorns have grown
Among that goodly seed
The worldly cares of day to day
The things we say we need.

Somehow their faith has come to be
A loser in the fight
Regardless of majority
A vote can't make it right.

I used to think the first command
Was useless in our day.
Who bows to calves, or carves a god
To worship anyway?

But we have turned our carnal lust
Into that sacred cow
Where to the simply deviant
We now just turn and bow.

The laws of love were given when
He made them man and wife.
Their unity the chosen way
Of bringing forth new life.

Have we not seen throughout the years
That following His plan
Leads to true prosperity
For each and every man?

Oh Lord, remove the blinders
Help us all to see
That following the laws of God
In truth will set us free!

Thursday
The cry that oft we dare not say
Is, "Lord, I want to see"
For in the light He shows the way
That we were meant to be.

Friday
No time to sit and recreate
It's time now to accelerate
Our search to harvest needy souls
Intensifies as we grow old.

Saturday
Wisdom, friend and guiding light
Come and make my pathway bright
Give me courage to endure
Always faithful, true, and sure.

Sunday, May 24, 2015

5/16/15 through 5/23/15

5/17/15 through 5/24/15

Sunday
Ascending to Your rightful throne
Disciples watched in awe
Declaring You as King alone
From everything they saw

But Your plan was greater still
Your blessings incomplete
To help us do the Father's will
You sent the Paraclete.

Monday
The grain of wheat must fall and die
And then be found to grow
Then as the stalk is reaching high
The gifts of Spirit flow.

Tuesday AM
Don't shrink away or fail to speak
The word God gives to you.
But raise the weary and the weak
As God says we should do.

Tuesday PM
Again I sit before the Lord
God of glory and grace
My weak and sinful self abhorred
Ashamed to lift my face

When will I ever gain the power
To turn away from sin
In courage, meet temptation's hour
And garner strength within?

A frightful thought to look upon
The scourges and the thorns
And know those sacred stripes were drawn
As products of my scorn

Lord make my greatest love be You
Make me always seek what's true
Help me always realize
That Satan's fool is really wise.

Wednesday
I watch in silence as each surge
Of blood comes from my heart
Transporting life and animating
Each and every part.

I don't know how, I don't know why
My thoughts are not that high
But this I know without a doubt
His love is what it's all about.

Thursday
Firmly bound forever free
Is what I ask dear Lord of Thee
That I might only rest and feed
In verdant pastures where You lead

Friday
The night before the Savior died
By closest friend, three times denied
But on the shore He fed and blessed
For love was there three times expressed.

Saturday
Don't worry how the rest are called
For you just follow me
You are the rock that I installed
The keeper of the key.

Saturday, May 16, 2015

5/10/15 through 5-16-15

Sunday
Love is meant for everyone
The Father's gift of precious Son
The Spirit too, He sent for all
Who hearken to the master's call.

Monday
Help me forsake myself I cry
Make me to love enough to die
Let not my search for pleasure win
Teach me to love and turn from sin.

Tuesday
There's more to the story than what we can read
How suddenly, faith in the Lord can now lead
The jailer, a soldier, to turn from his post
Becoming for prisoners, their servant and host.

The power of God is so hard to describe
It will gnaw at our gut and cause us to decide
If we will be creatures all puffed up with pride,
Or yield to the Lord, and let Him be our guide.

Wednesday
For now it is too much to know
All that the Lord has planned.
We feed on milk until we grow
To follow His command.

Thursday
We must replace, apostles say
The one of us who did betray
Then hung in utter desolation
On a tree of condemnation.

One with us throughout the days
Must join with us and teach His ways.
Replacing Judas' deeds at night
Matthias acts in holy light

Friday
Mother Mary be my guide
This day remain here at my side
Let me see your holy face
And shower down His loving grace.

For I desire to love like thee,
With perfect, kind humility
Trusting that someday I might,
Like you, reflect His wondrous light.

Saturday
A knock says may I please come in
And turn your tendency towards sin,
To One who truly satisfies,
And from the father of those lies.

5/3/15 through 5/9/15

Sunday
Accept it all with joy they say
A gift from God on high,
But I can't find a joyful way
And choose to wonder why.

Why not, the better question posed,
should trouble come to me?
Is it right that I suppose
From trial my life be free?

Monday
Pride is such a subtle vice
It sneaks through any crack
And then it does in us entice
Our prayer life to grow slack.

Tuesday
We're called to persevere in pain
That we might win eternal gain
Then like apostles, and like Paul
Might spread the Word to one and all.

To learn to love I must obey
And follow in the Master's way
Forsaking ease and glory high
To freely choose the cross and die.

Wednesday
"I do believe!", the father said.
Help my unbelief.
Don't turn and leave my son for dead,
I'm crying for relief.

Thursday
The struggle for the earthly gain
Is always proved to be in vain.
For those who strive to get ahead,
Eventually, they turn up dead.

Then what becomes of all their wealth,
Their quest for power and perfect health?
The dreams become for those who sinned
Just dandelions in the wind.

So tell me what their silver gleaned,
A blessing or a curse?
For they say you've never seen
A U-haul on a hearse.

Friday
To love sounds like a simple rule
That we could all obey
So often though, we play the fool
And self gets in the way.

Staurday
How shall the young be sinless found,
When in this world, and all around,
Temptations vie to hold their sway?
The Word of God they must obey!

Sunday, May 3, 2015

4/26/15 through 5/2/15

Sunday
They act as if they know it all
And so refuse to hear the call
Or listen when the still small voice
Beckons, make the holy choice.

Good shepherd tries to lead the way
But they insist to go astray
and find a hungry wolf instead
Of verdant pastures for their bed.

Monday
Why does sleep elude my eyes?
Why does your will seem in disguise?
Why don't I rest and sleep in ease?
Why don't I get down on my knees?

Tuesday
The Master called His sheep by name
And all who followed Love then came
But those who always asked for signs
Refused to follow His designs.

Wednesday
When amidst a great attack
No time to let our hands grow slack
But praise Him still for we behold
By fire He cleanses precious gold.

Make me like Barnabas and Paul
Who gladly suffered for the call
And may I never shy away
From speaking what you'd have me say.

Thursday
How can I think of writing rhyme
When I sit to pass the time
Sipping whiskey for the pain
A tooth has gone awry again.

Friday
A people set apart for You
With holy work for each to do
Like Joseph through our work express
Desire for love and holiness.

Let me listen Lord to Thee
For the Word You speak to me
And act upon your each command
Or lest my house be built on sand.

What a treat to sit with You
Enjoying in this place
The simple quiet solitude
And blessings of Your grace

Saturday
In the name of Jesus pray
And God will grant to you this day
From His font of grace thereof
What's best for you and those you love.

When Mary said let it be done
According to Your will
The Spirit then conceived the Son
Her tabernacle filled.

Sunday, April 26, 2015

4/19/15 through 4/25/15

Sunday
The heart that sings the Easter hymn
Is one that walked the road with Him.
The road that leads to Calvary
The road to death upon the tree.

When self is emptied we can see
The joy that love was meant to be.
Then resurrected life we know,
And gifts from Holy Spirit flow.

Monday
Work for the food that satisfies
Not for the latest batch of lies
Not for the flower that fades away
But for the light of endless day.

Tuesday
You gave the martyrs strength to die
While pagans stood and  wondered why
Would one endure such pain and shame
For just the sake of Jesus' name?

But with the martyr's blood that flowed
The greatest power of love You showed
With fortitude their trials endured
Eternal life for them assured.

Wednesday
The bread came down from heaven when
The time had been fulfilled
To do His Father's will and then
With Spirit He infilled

Thursday
Unless the grain falls down and dies
Unless the fool becomes the wise
Unless the proud become the meek
Unless the strong become the weak

No hunger of the soul inside
We'll ever find is satisfied.
No way can famished souls be fed
With just one grain, there is no bread.

Friday
When will the foolish ever know
How will the simple ever grow
If we don't teach by what they see
Lived out each day by you and me?

Saturday
The Word, my son your daily bread
Make time to ponder in your head
And as you chew on each small part
The Lord will write it on your heart

His words are written for the throng
And never will they steer you wrong
If following our great high priest
You listen well and love the least.

Sunday, April 19, 2015

4/12/15 through 4/18/15

Sunday
The darkness leaves when Light arrives
The Light that brings new hope to lives
The Light that prompts the birds to sing
The Light gives life to everything.

Monday
The wind we know not where it comes,
Nor even where it goes.
But if it be the breath of God
The Holy Spirit flows.

Tuesday
Oh Lord I need Your help this day
To lift my daily cross
To find in You the Truth, the Way,
And choose the gold, not dross.

Wednesday
The daily bread that You provide
Is in Your presence at my side
When anytime throughout the day
I take the time to simply pray.

Thursday
Lord grant me faith in you this day
Give me the courage to obey
To place o'er You no earthly thing
And make of You my everything.

Friday
I gaze upon a late night sky
And ponder other worlds so high
So far away from me I know
That mortal man could never go.

\How far I cannot comprehend
I wonder does it ever end?
Such beauty in the sky above
Created by our God of love.

Saturday
Security a mere charade
For not with things is safety made
Through simple plain obedience
The Lord becomes  our great defense.

Easter Week 4/5/15 - 4/11/15

Sunday
Such a love beyond conceiving
Resurrected for believing
Death and darkness now are fleeing
Prisoners and captives freeing

"Be not afraid" we hear Him say
Just follow me I am the way
No more to wait in dark of night
Behold the risen Lamb of light.

Don't cling to me He said to her
As something on this earth
The length and breadth of love is found
In waters of new birth.

Monday
In broken bread we recognize
The One who heals and changes lives
The who takes the form of bread
The One who's risen from the dead.

Tuesday
With hearts aflame along the way
We walked with Him 'till eve of day
And listened while He did expound
Where all through scripture Christ is found.

Wednesday
We pressed Him, come and spend the night
And travel on when morn is bright
Then as we sat at table spread
Our eyes were opened with the bread.

Thursday
Was something different 'round the world,
The day that Jesus rose?
Did distant parts have flaming hearts
Does anyone now know?

I can't produce a witness now.
But, by faith I know somehow
That even in the darkest place
There came a flood of Easter grace.

Friday
Is it God, or is it man,
Whom should we obey?
The first disciples made their choice
To follow in the Way.

Saturday
We may not have Sanhedrin here
Who threaten to do harm,
But oft we let opinions sway,
And over truth, choose charm.

Lent 2015

Lent 2015
This year part of my Lenten observance is to write four lines each day that reflect what the Lord is saying to me.  What follows is the product.  Perhaps I need some listening lessons.

1. Wednesday comes with trepidation.
Ashes placed in reparation.
While in hunger, days are long,
But in my weakness you are strong.

2.   Now begins the forty days
To cleanse the heart in varied ways.
To search for him in self denied,
And break the fetters sin has tied.

3.  No heart contrite or humble spurned,
But lives by grace in penance turned
From sinfulness and selfish lust
To lives of love and simple trust.

4.  A coarse and callous heart has lied.
My sinfulness abounds inside.
Choked by cares throughout the day,
How easily, I’m found to stray.

5.  Anger flared up yesterday.
A child who failed to get his way.
Lord quench that flame in me today.
Let me, to all, your love repay.

6.  Every day they’re at the door
The indigent and homeless poor,
But passing by we turn our eyes,
And Christ, we fail to recognize.

7.  Turn my ear to you oh Lord,
God of mercy and peace.
Then speak to me your guiding words
And grant me sweet release.

8.  In Ninevah where Jonah spoke,
Great sinners lived as pagan folk,
But when his word reached to their ears
Repentance brought the gift of tears.

9.  Deliver me dear Lord I pray,
From all my rude and selfish ways.
Grant me the ability
To exercise humility.

10.  My weakness and my frailty
Are evident and plain to see.
I say I want to fast and pray,
But then my self gets in the way.

11.  Love, the Lenten clarion call
That touches hearts and beckons all,
To look upon his suff’ring face
And find in there the gift of grace.

12.  Before the three on Tabor’s height
Your glory shone in splendor bright.
But do not speak of this you said,
Until I’ve risen from the dead.

13.  The cold of winter still persists.
My heart, your love, does still resist.
Lord break the ice and warm the chill,
And form my life within Your will.

14.  For sure my pride and haughtiness
Exclude me from Your happiness
For when like scribe and Pharisee
My works are done for all to see.

15.  Beneath the cross and labored cries
His bloody feet before her eyes
There in darkness cold and stark
A sword did pierce the Virgin’s heart.

16.  Such change we need down deep within
To shed the anger and the sin,
To leave the rich in all of us,
And learn to love the Lazarus.

17.  Perseverance the essential key
To unlock peace for thee
But, how, I pray, will you ever see
When you give up so easily?

18.  I see the beauty in her face
So innocent and pure
A countenance of holiness
A love to long endure.

19.  No crooked eyes or sordid thought
While gazing at this sight
But purity and love sublime
Shine forth in splendid light.

20.  I wish to join him for the feast,
But not when called to be the least.
Aspiring to great renown
Though health in humble service found.

21.  The key to happiness and peace
Is finding ways to love the least.
Transgressors too we must forgive,
And thus we learn just how to live.

22.  How cold and hardened is my will
I need your warmth to break the chill
The fire of love to set aside
My weakness and my foolish pride.

23.  Sin is a sin no matter how small
A turning from God each time that we fall.
Here is the best way to fight it I’ve found,
You simply must choose to then turn around.

24.  Impatient and impetuous
Describes I’d say most all of us.
Our lives in scattered disarray
No time to sit with Him and pray.

25.  I sit and ask the Lord to speak
To me a man of will so weak.
I stumble on the smallest stone
But still I’m never left alone.

26.  I have no time for patience
For it’s only worth a pittance.
My want to quickly gratify,
I simply wish to satisfy.

27.  Happiness comes not from things,
But from the joy that Jesus brings.
A joy untouched by temporal trial
Found by living His lifestyle.

28.  The glitter of the world is found
To turn man’s heart and pull him down.
But then he finds those jewels at last
Are nothing more than shiny glass.

29.  Oh hungry flesh, how can it be
That contentment come to thee?
Whatever fed is not appeased.
How will the Lord be ever pleased?

30.  Through the world roams Lucifer
Foe of all who are and were.
Glutton, fiend, and adversary,
Make my steps of him be wary.

31.  Wisdom fails where pride takes hold
Our tendency to be so bold.
How prone we are to self-deceit.
We fail to see Him in the wheat.

32.  What puny faith, how little trust,
Is placed in Him, the true and just!
His love surpasses all we know,
His grace a mighty river flows.

33.  The time is near, it’s almost gone,
Here in the dark before the dawn.
For Lent is short, it’s getting late.
No time left to procrastinate.

34.  When looking at my own misdeeds
A haughtiness of heart soon breeds

I'll highlight then another's vice
And somehow think that makes me nice.

35.  Idolatry of any kind
Will warp the soul and skew the mind
Enslaving one to some mere thing
And turning faces from the King

It's called a vice because it binds

In heavy chains our hearts and minds
Jaws are poised and open wide
To squeeze the life from deep inside

36.  Incarnate God, how can it be

That all that is, is found in thee?
How could it be the virgin bride
Beheld the God of all inside?

37.  No greater love could we conceive
Why, then, do many not believe

Why do they call Him just a man
And not accept the great I AM?

38.  In suffering He hears our plea
The one we placed upon the tree

By joining Him in sacrifice
He leads us to His paradise

39.  One yes to God is all it takes
To wipe out sin and past mistakes

More than the mind could ere conceive
He grants if we will just believe.

40.  As this Holy Week begins
We call to mind our faults and sins
It was for them we recognize
He bled upon the cross and died.

First we hail as King indeed

And then we hit Him with the reed
We lay our branches at His feet,
And then we strike Him on the cheek.

Giving Him our royal robes

We turn and strip Him of His clothes
We shout to raise Him King on high,
And then we shout to crucify.

41.  The bruised reed he shall not break

A time of justice He shall make.
Quenching not the wick that smoulders
Bringing joy to weary shoulders

42.  Betrayal comes to mind this day

But surely it's not I we say
With loyal words my voice has flowed,
But listen now, the cock has crowed.

Great plans I have to honor You
In all I say and all I do
Your graces then on me bestowed,
But listen now, the cock has crowed.

43.  My tithe of mint and rue and dillNo substitute to do your will.
Love's the simple seed You sowed
But listen now, the cock has crowed.

Big promises have not been keptWhile in your agony I slept.
The cross a vast and heavy load.
Yes, once again the cock has crowed.

44.  May the oils blessed this day

Bring life and health to all we pray.
To those anointed into light
Give them the strength to fight for right

45.  What can I say about this day,
The one they label Good
Have I prepared and freely shared
The way I know I should?

No mind can grip that awful trip

To Golgotha on high
The thorns were bent, His scourges rent
Redemption drawing nigh

We made of Him a sign of sin

A serpent raised up high.
His blood has flowed, the cock has crowed
Redemption drawing nigh.

Humble...  Stripped...  Brutally whipped
Jeered by passers by
It's true, This One was sure His Son
Redemption drawing nigh.

46.  What happens now, does life somehow,
Go on without the Lord?
Love sublime, denied three times,
And broken by the hoard.

In Him I've seen the great I AM
But tell me what I am
Am I for sure the image of
This God of perfect Love?

Help me Lord to learn to love
In all I say or do,
And never shy from sacrifice
But lift my cross with You.

Half as Much

Half as Much

Half as much is royalty
Of how important I think me.
No fair mistake is overlooked.
I guess my ego’s overcooked.

Pretentious with the service here
I let them know that it’s quite clear
If anything is gone awry,
I’ll throw a tantrum, scream, and cry.

Would it not, more pleasant be,
If I, in soft humility,
Just offered up in quiet peace
And made instead, myself the least?

2015 March for Life

When God created man and wife
He bid them now bring forth new life.
Intending that the human race
Perpetuate through warm embrace.

But sin was present that first time
When man and wife in love sublime,
Brought forth a child of innocence
Yet stained with dread concupiscence.

Through many and perverted ways
In arrogance and lust we've strayed
From marital affinity
That mirrors Holy Trinity.

Then in our great society
Of individuality
Denigrated bodies serve
As tools for pleasures we "deserve".

And should a child come to be
Inside the womb we'll sadly see
The inconvenient accident
Will soon become a new life spent.

The Lord created from the start
Our bodies with their sacred parts
Designed to form the holy bond
In married love where it belongs.

In shock and awe the world sees
These simple marriage mysteries
That call us to go deeper still
And live our lives within His will.

A sacrificial call for sure,
But deeper still to love that's pure.
Beckoning a self that gives
Until the self no longer lives.

For when we give all we possess
Our faithful God will surely bless
And substitute for hearts of stone
A heart aflame for love alone.

Three Pretty Girls

Bob and Megan you must know
That raising pretty girls
Requires more from Mom and Dad
Than pony tails and curls

The span is brief to set them on
The path of righteousness
No time along the way to waste
With foolish idleness.

Now plant within these tender hearts
A pure and holy seed,
So Faith in God will be their strength
And help in time of need.

Then as it sprouts you nourish it
In every waking hour
To grow a Lily pure and white
A precious holy flower.

Remind these dear and cherished ones
In every time and place
Whatever trials come their way
He grants sufficient Grace.

Christmas 2014

Christmas 2014

How long the days before the Christ
When lamb and bullock slain
And man would fear to speak or write
Their Father’s holy name

No sacrifice could slake the guilt
Of man in all his pride
No way to gain forgiveness
Or stem the evil tide.

All hope was in a promise
At the fall the Father said:
The offspring of the woman
Would crush the serpent’s head.

Then shoot was sprung from Jesse’s stump
A scion thrust from roots
And He the Spirit of our God
Would guide in all pursuits.

Wonder Counsellor, Mighty God,
Eternal Prince of Peace.
He came to lead us from our sin
To life that ere will cease.

That holy night the Son of God
With no place for a bed,
In a lowly feeding trough
Would rest his tiny head.

Prepare the way.  Make straight His path.
He comes to set you free.
Through all distractions of this time

Be sure the Lord, you see.
